Redefining God – The Lies

1 Timothy 4:11 Timothy 4:1-2, “Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving doctrines of demons, speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron.” NKJV

How many people do you know who are looking for meaning and seeking for a higher purpose that will fill their inner emptiness and persistent longings for peace?   How many people do you know who are hoping to connect to something greater than themselves, but they want to do it on their own terms.  I know of plenty!

In this day and age, many people adopt a vast collection of beliefs and practices.  They gather an assortment of beliefs that fit their spiritual hunger, appetite, desires, and more.   It is a “Have it your own way” religion.

It is amazing to see how so many people in our very materialistic, self centered age turn to the things of the spirit world and with great emphasis upon it. More and more, I’m seeing people turn to New Spirituality or New Age as their way for a spiritual journey.

Pantheism, a conception of God, is a belief extensively developed in Eastern mysticism and has been greatly endorsed by friends of Oprah and widely accepted by viewers.  Pantheism is most easily defined as a belief that “God is all, and all is God.”  The word pan means all and refers to the idea that all that exists is God.  Everything is God; you are God, I am God, nature is God, God is all that there is.  -It is this pantheistic conception of God that forms the basis for the New Spirituality.

New Spirituality encourages people not to go to Christ as sinners, but to go within themselves to bring about their own transformation.  New Spirituality promotes that all supernatural forces are good and in the people’s best interest.  It is believed that higher consciousness is achieved through meditations, breathing exercises, yoga, diet, crystals, channeling, spirit guides, etc.  These practices are all geared for the purpose of awakening the god in man. This is farthest from the truth!

Our world is in a state of war.  We live in enemy territory.  For now, until Jesus returns, Satan is here.  He’s roaming about on earth (Job 1:7) to take down as many people as he can to hell with him.  Satan hates man and he will do whatever it takes to bring each person down.   The forces of evil are constantly battling against us – trying to deceive and destroy us.

1 Timothy 4:1-2, “Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving doctrines of demons, speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron.” NKJV

The “latter times” refers to our times today and Paul, the apostle, was speaking of what laid ahead for the church in his day.

Some shall depart from the faith.” Paul is warning that there will be heretical teachers who will mislead a great number of people. There will be a departure from the faith.

The word, “deceiving” means to ensnare, impose a false idea or belief that causes ignorance, bewilderment or helplessness, to lead astray or to beguile – which stresses the use of charm and persuasion in deceiving.  In fact, Satan is all those things.

speaking lies in hypocrisy” means they pretend to be something they are not.

“Seared” means to burn, scorch, mark or injure with or as if with sudden application of intense heat.  In Greek is “Kauteriazo”, which means to mark by branding.  In verse 2, the word means branded with their own consciences or those whose souls are branded with the marks of sin.  In other words, those who no longer have any sensitivity to people or to the Lord.

In Acts 20:29-31, Paul warned that false teachers would arise from within the church and stressed about the seriousness of idolatry and false worship.

Acts 20:29-31, “For I know this, that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. 30 Also from among yourselves men will rise up, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after themselves. 31 Therefore watch, and remember that for three years I did not cease to warn everyone night and day with tears.”

In verse 29, “savage wolves” is used in reference to false teachers, a figure Jesus himself once used of “false prophets” in Matthew 7:15.  Not only will wolves from the outside try to sneak in but perverse men will stir things up from within.

Paul fed and warned the flock night and day.  We too should feed and warn in our own families or ministries: If we feed but don’t warn, how helpful are we?

When Jesus said, “Unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God”, John 3:3, He was speaking about an especially unique conversion.  For one thing, this conversion is done for us by God; it certainly is not something that we achieve.  We are to be “born from above” by a miracle performed by a personal God.  Specifically, we must see ourselves as sinners who need the reconciliation that Christ alone can bring.

In 2 Timothy 4:3-4, Paul said, “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.”

Today, people do not want to listen to the truth but rather wander off into myths. The God of the Bible is not found by getting in touch with our own consciousness, but rather by looking at His revelation in the person of Jesus Christ.  This God is One who is seen by reading the Scriptures.

There are not many ways and paths to God.  There is only one way.  As Jesus said in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

Here are some things to really think about.

  • Where are you on your spiritual journey?
  • What do you believe?
  • Are you seeking the truth?
  • How are you seeking the truth?
