The Gap Theory, also known as the Restitution Theory, places a lengthy period of time between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2. This theory was devised to help scientists use their scientific theories to correlate time with Biblical accounts. In essence, it was an attempt to reconcile the Bible with the views of science. This allows a compromise for evolutionists to try to prove the earth is billions of years old.
The gap theory suggests there was an original creation between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2 and as a result of Lucifer’s rebellion and fall, the earth became chaos. The phrase “formless and void” in Genesis 1:2 describes the chaotic earth that God judged. Millions of years took place between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2, in agreement with scientific evaluation concerning the age of the earth.
Another idea which the Gap Theory suggests is the sun was created before the 4th day, which is incorrect because it was created on the 4th day. Genesis 1:14-15.
These suggestions reduce God to a weak being with little control over His own creation. The powerful God who created the world also presides over its destiny.
I do not agree with the Gap Theory because it contradicts and causes confusion with what the Bible says. God’s word should be taken literally. We either believe God’s word is true or not.
God deals with facts – the truth, not theories or conjectures. If He dealt with mere suggestions, this means His word cannot be taken literally and truthfully.
