“A nation which does not remember what it was yesterday, does not know what it is today, nor what it is trying to do. We are trying to do a futile thing if we do not know where we have come from, or what we have been about.” – President Woodrow Wilson
God used imperfect men to establish this country. When the Founding Fathers of America established the laws and the constitution, they used biblical principles and standards to go by. The Founding Fathers understood that this country could prosper only under God’s blessings. They recognized that for God to bestow His blessings, His principals had to be honored and embraced.
In 1789, George Washington asserted, “It is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor”
In a letter John Adams wrote to Thomas Jefferson in 1813, he declared, “The General principals on which the fathers achieved independence were …the general principals of Christianity.”
When you bring the political process before God, things happen by God’s initiative. It is a powerful and empowering process and as Christians, we should pray for President Obama, his family and his administration, asking the Lord to guide him with His wisdom and understanding, with discernment, safety, health and all spiritual blessings.
Prayer is the most significant way you can impact our country. Let us pray and continue to pray for wise solutions to the difficult problems President Obama and members of his team face.
The basis of America rests on God’s standards and the only way to preserve the nation’s foundation is for citizens to have knowledge of those standards. It is more important for the leader in office to understand those standards and protect America’s foundation.
Apostle Paul wrote, in his first letter to Timothy, the first priority in our fulfillment of our civic duties (“first of all,” 1 Timothy 2:1) is to pray. We are to remember everyone, including all those in authority over us, with “petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings.” Paul stated that proper conduct within the body of Christ includes praying for and respecting those in power as a primary spiritual civic duty.
We must learn about the values on which our nation was established. The nation’s institutions must return to their Biblical foundations if we are to remain a world leader.
“Thomas Jefferson said ‘God who gave us life gave us liberty. Can the liberties of a nation be secure when we have removed a conviction that these liberties are the gift of God?’ ” Senator Robert Byrd said: “(Jefferson’s words are) a… warning that to remove God from this country will destroy it.”
As Americans, we must educate ourselves about our heritage of freedom. We must become articulate enough to take on the activists, non-believing friends, co-workers, etc, to challenge them, their terms, to reframe their debate and to remind the nation what makes us unique and great. Pray for boldness to speak up about things we believe! When was the last time you prayed for boldness?
The motto “In God We Trust” was placed on the United States coins because of the increased religious sentiment during the American Civil War. On November 20, 1861, Secretary of Treasury, Salmon Chase wrote in a letter to the director of the Mint of Philadelphia, “No nation can be strong except in the strength of God, or safe except in His defense. The trust of our people in God should be declared on our national coins…”
As John MacArthur wrote in his book entitled, “Can God Bless America?” “The remedy to our nation’s moral and spiritual woes must begin at the house of God. The process starts with personal repentance. And if Christians truly want to see God’s blessing on our society, we ought to be models of genuine contrition and humility, rather than merely pointing fingers of blame at the evils of secular society. God Himself said to Israel, “If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land” (2 Chronicles 7:14, emphasis added).”
Let us fervently pray for the Lord to intervene and save America from the destructive cultural influences in our land. Pray for restoration of America’s biblical foundations!
