Spiritual Warfare

Ephesians 6:16, “Above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.”

“Above all” may mean that the “shield” is to be used against everything.  The Christian’s calling in the world is that of a soldier.  The Christian’s shield offers protection against “all fiery darts of the wicked one”.  The flaming arrows of Satan cannot penetrate the believer who places his faith in God.

“Fiery darts” from the devil could be doubt, temptations, insecurity, evil imaginations, bad memories, vain thoughts, etc.

In order to stand against the tricks of the devil, we must put on the whole armor of God – Ephesians 6:10-20.  What does Satan want from us?  He wants us to sin so that our souls would be separated from God.  Satan will do whatever it takes to bring us down. He wants us to reject God’s authority.  We are his targets of attacks.

If we are believers, Satan knows that he can’t keep us from God’s love and that our souls are eternally secure since we are God’s children.  But, Satan can break our fellowship.  He can take our eyes off God, which is why it’s very important to read the Bible every day, attend church and fellowship with other believers.

My dear friends, don’t grow weary!  We are in a spiritual battle and we must use the word of God as our powerful tool to deflect against the fiery darts of Satan.  Don’t forget, Satan is here on earth.

Job 1:7 “And the Lord said to Satan, “From where do you come?” So Satan answered the Lord and said “from going to and fro on the earth, and from walking back and forth on it.”

1 Peter 5:8 “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.”

Although the devil is strong, it is ours in God’s strength to withstand him and overcome him.

2 Corinthians 10:3-4 “For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh, for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses.”

Remember – life is a battle and we cannot win it.  Who can win the battle of life?  Only the Lord can win the battle.  The forces of evil are constantly battling against us – trying to deceive and destroy us.  So life for us is a spiritual battle – not only is it on a personal level but also on a cosmic level in a sense that forces of good and evil are waging an unseen war in which many times we get caught in the middle.

God has given us His Word as a manual for life.  It was written for our instruction.  Everything we need, we can find in the Bible.  Whether it’s direction, hope, wisdom, instruction, God gives us all these things through His Word. So when we read the stories in the Bible, they are spiritual lessons for us.

1 Timothy 1:18–19 This charge I commit to you, son Timothy, according to the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you may wage the good warfare, 19 having faith and a good conscience, which some having rejected, concerning the faith have suffered shipwreck.

1 Timothy 6:12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

  1. so great to see articles on spiritual warfare!! so many Christians neglect this area. I like that you mentioned darts of the devil can be doubts, so true. I listened to a sermon by pastor Mark Driscoll and he talked about ordinary demonic and extraordinary demonic. the devil loves ordinary demonic tactics because most people don’t even recognize them. One of the ordinary demonic tactics of the devil is vague condemnation – stuff like, your not really a Christian, your such a failure, you should just quit, you should just die, etc. Yes, the the bible tells us not to rely on our feelings, but test everything against the Word of God! Anyway, love your blog, what a breath of fresh air to see a blog on this topic! I didn’t see a place to follow you but I would love to follow you if you set it up! I run a Latin desserts blog. Have a great day! Look forward to reading all your stuff!

    • Hi!

I’m so glad you liked my posting on Spiritual Warfare! This originally came from a letter that I wrote to a friend who was going through some very difficult times. After I started my blog, I thought it would be good to post to help those who needed encouragement in this area. I haven’t heard of pastor Mark Driscoll. Do you have a link to where I can find his sermon online? I would really like to listen to it!

You’re so right about the enemy’s tactics – he’s subtle, sneaky and very cunning! I’m actually writing a new post about Halloween, its origin and how Satan is using venues like the media to seduce people. I’m so excited about it because there’s so much to write about! I have 5 pages so far…. I just love sharing God’s word!!!!

Thanks for letting me know that I don’t have a “Follow” option available on my blog – I’ve added it. Thanks again! I hope to hear from you soon! I reeeeally like Latin desserts and I can’t wait to check out your blog!!!
